REPORTING – NF2 SUMMER GATHERING 2015
On the weekend of 7th, 8th & 9th August, in the depths of the National Forest in Derbyshire, Can You Hear Us? C.I.C hosted the NF2 Summer Gathering 2015. Along with some of their family, friends and carers, NF2ers had the opportunity to try new things in a supportive environment including; adaptive archery, a birds of prey session, canal boat ride and various creative activities such as decoupage, colour therapy and printing. Most importantly the Gathering offered the chance for NF2ers to relax in the company of other people who understand what it is like to live with the condition. When attempting to interpret just how special and needed these social gatherings are, we prefer our members to do the talking. So here are a few insights:
“The highlight of the weekend for me was seeing people unwind; relaxing together without needing to worry about their NF2 for a few days. These Gatherings are starting to feel a bit like a little NF2 family who all understand each other perfectly. There is such an atmosphere of kindness, care for each other and thoughtfulness.” (Anna Lickley)
“The activities were brilliant; especially the archery, where all morning I said I couldn’t do it. But it showed me that I could and that I only had to try. The highlight was getting the bullseye on my last shot!” (Ian Rose)
“I had a great weekend. My favourite part was meeting everyone. With being so young I thought I would be quite frightened but it was the complete opposite. Everybody has such a positive friendly vibe and it’s extremely contagious. I felt comfortable around everyone and had a lovely weekend. It was a huge learning experience for me.” (Eiko Swarbrick)
“The best thing about the weekend for me was meeting NF2 people like myself; made me feel I am not alone any more. I was angry person inside living with this NF2, but not now. I will have a different outlook now and in the future.” (Paul Jordan)
