Companions in Clinic (CiC) is a small group of individuals affected by NF2, providing an alternative from the draining atmosphere of waiting rooms on clinic days.
The primary aim of CiC is to reduce the anxiety that comes with days when NF2 patients are anticipating updates on their health. Unlike the usual busy waiting areas, these small groups offer a private setting where patients and their families can relax in a calm and comfortable environment.
At CiC you have the chance to meet new people, to chat, share experiences, learn something new, play some games, or simply sit in a quiet space with a cuppa and read your book for example.
“I found Companions in Clinic to be a great help to me. It completely transformed what can be a draining and sometimes daunting clinic day into a huge positive. I cannot think of anything better for an NF2 patient to meet others with the same condition and Companions in Clinic has provided that.” (Ben)
Your NF2 nurse will ensure that you are in the right place at the right time and your companions will ensure that you leave clinic feeling supported.
CiC runs every second Monday of the month and is currently exclusive to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. All of those with NF2 under the care of Addenbrookes are invited to attend this small and friendly group on monthly clinic days even without an appointment to see the doctor.
“We felt relaxed straight away and were soon chatting over a cup of tea – a very different environment to the usual waiting area. The nurses came along to call people for their appointments and as one person would leave the room more people would come in to join us, at one point we even ran out of chairs!” (Sharron)
“It was great to meet other parents in person. It felt good to be able to share news from clinic appointment. Hope it could also feel reassuring if news was bad, to share with someone who has been there, rather than go away feeling isolated. Makes the day at the hospital have at least one positive point.” (Wendy)
